The importance of being social

Social networking has been growing rapidly over the last few years with worldwide phenomena such as Facebook, Orkut, Linked In, Identoo and others. These platforms 'exploit' the innate human need to connect and share - sometimes to an extent that make us look stupid and naive.

Locally, there have been some feeble efforts to build such a network - efforts that unfortunately were not always well planned and well supported. These mishaps have, perhaps, discouraged others from jumping on the social networking wagon and try to have a local network.

It is perhaps high time for the commercial sector to get hold of such a vacuum and offer the small, but highly active local communty/ies a localised social rendez-vous. The knowledge-base that already exists thanks to the big-and-mighty, is a great starting point to develop an alternative/localised social network for Malta. I believe that copying what is out there is not only 'cheap' but also futile since experience has showed us all that most of the things that work 'out there' do not work 'in here'.

At Abakus we are all keen social networkers, with subscriptions to a myriad of popular and less-popular networks. This gives us an insight to what is happening 'out there' so that we can apply such knowledge for a solution 'in here'.
